HPV and Oral Cancer

Posted .

HPV is the human papillomavirus, also known as genital warts. There are over 100 varieties of HPV, 15 of which are known to be related to cancer of the cervix and the mouth/throat. HPV is now the most common sexually transmitted disease in the USA and is also related to a surge in cancer. Most people are not aware they are infected and most people will clear the virus from their systems after a couple of years. However, over 35,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, the fastest growing segment related to HPV. During our routine oral cancer screenings, we examine the oral tissues closely with an operating microscope. The current odds of 5 year oral cancer survival are 50%. Please share this information with your loved ones, especially your kids, to help them make healthy decisions.
