Probiotics: The Dental Super Bugs (in a good way)

Posted .

Living microorganisms (mostly bacteria) that have beneficial effects on our health are called “probiotics.” Probiotic cultures are commonly used in foods like yogurt and sauerkraut. Preliminary data published in the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association (2009) describes the use of probiotics to help prevent dental cavities, heal gum disease and improve bad breath. The best bugs to help us for each condition need to be determined and tested. When I prescribe antibiotics, I always recommend taking a probiotic supplement (2 hours before or after the antibiotic dose) to restore the natural probiotic bacteria that are wiped out by the antibiotic.
